In taking the reins on Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, Zeboyd has created not only a game that will sate fans eager to see the story continue, but a game that stands up firmly on its own. At five bucks, it’s an easy recommendation for anyone even remotely interested in role-playing games.

Brilliant writing. 16-bit aesthetic looks great, and complements the gameplay.

Episode 3 had me laughing out loud on more occasions than the first two games put together.

The writing is still incredibly clever, and the combat a ton of fun. As a bonus, those who haven’t played the first two shouldn’t have much trouble jumping in here. There are allusions to events that transpired in the first two games, but it takes very little time to pick up on the basic premise. As someone who loved the first two titles, and was saddened by the cancellation of the third, this game is everything I could have hoped for

Fans of strategic RPG gameplay will definitely find a lot to sink their teeth into here, and it’s hard not to find yourself compelled to keep discovering more about New Arcadia and the heroes and weirdos within it. Delivers a robustly challenging and frequently funny old-school RPG experience that’s heavy on wit, offense, strangeness, and retro style.

The good news is that the series’ signature offbeat humor is as vibrant as ever, and On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 is worth playing for the laughs alone. The better news is that the combat in this loving tribute to the heroic quests of old is smartly designed and stands up today whether you’re a seasoned player of 16-bit RPGs or not.  At the refreshingly modest price of just $4.99, the bounty of laughs and the satisfaction of hard-earned victories aplenty make On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 a journey well worth taking.

  • Highlights from Early Reviews!

Early praise on new Rain-Slick game!

    IGN
    8 out of 10-Great

“The terrific sense of humor and retro stylings work together well.”

“Distills the humorous melodrama and razor-sharp wit from Rain-Slick’s 3D entries, and then fuses it with stellar Super NES-era pixel art, all without losing an atom of the sharp wit, detailed Lovecraft-ian lore, and goofy melodrama that make the series special.”

“The third episode of Penny Arcade Adventures looks and plays different than its predecessors, and the new direction is one worth rallying behind. ..the smarter combat and more elaborate encounters keep battles entertaining while the witty, long-form comedy keeps the overly dramatic story light and fun. Unless you’re allergic to nostalgia, there’s no reason not to play Rain-Slick.”

“Example of how dated graphics can be mixed with smart, forward-thinking design to create a thoroughly modern game.”

    GamesRadar
    4 out of 5

“High on charm. Writer Holkins and the game’s artists imbue the characters with chemistry, making their interactions come to life with just text and lightly animated character portraits.”

“Rain-Slick 3 is an easy choice for anyone with an appreciation for turn-based combat and a good Cthulhu reference.”

    RPGamer
    4 out of 5 – Great

“The classes themselves are all brilliantly designed, some exhibiting a witty reimagining of classic archetypes, while others throw archetypes away entirely in favor of completely new ideas.”

“Combat gleam(s) with forward-thinking design, streamlining certain archaic aspects of RPGs to keep things fast-paced and fun.”

“The humor and terrific class system make it a great choice for fans of Penny Arcade and classic RPGs alike.”

    Wired
”It’s filled with quality. The writing is laugh-out-loud funny at times, the enemies and their behaviors are creative and surprising and the class-change system is great fun to mess around with. It’s like Final Fantasy V on steroids.”

    Examiner
    “Rain-Slick Precipice 3 is 16-bit bliss”

“A 16-bit nostalgiagasm loaded with offbeat humor and absolutely insane abilities and encounters.“

    Snackbar Games
    5/5

“If you like the oddball hijinks that Gabe and Tycho get into in the Penny Arcade comics, then this is the game for you. If you also happen to like classic RPGs, then it’s a match made in heaven.

“A fully-featured RPG with beautiful graphics, great writing, and fun mechanics.“

Penny Arcade’s new On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 game is now on Steam, so you can get it now!

Timing info on other platforms will come soon.

  • Penny Arcade’s New “On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3” Releasing Monday, June 25!

    June 19th, 2012

Bonus game included FREE for first week purchasers and launch trailer now online at www.rainslickgame.com

June 19, 2012 Seattle, WA – Moving up the date by more than two weeks, Penny Arcade has announced June 25 as the premiere for “On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3”.  The title, which chronicles the saga of Apocalyptics scholar Tycho Brahe and his volatile, probably entirely human partner Jonathan Gabriel has also just posted a sumptuous launch trailer at www.rainslickgame.com!

“On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3” is planned for initial release on Steam, and Xbox timing contingent on the final Peer Review and release process at the Indie Games channel.  It will then be available soon thereafter for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android and Mac.

As “On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3” begins, The Startling Developments Detective Agency springs into action prompted by a call from a mysterious source.  The ever escalating perils on the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness that follow will harrow players with our proprietary HauntMax haunting technology.  A cunning evil Doctor, a series of Unexplainable Thefts, a Mysterious Book of Power, Enigmatic Supernatural Forces, Hobo bosses, the occasional Robot, and more await.

Penny Arcade has paired up with Zeboyd Games, the creators of “Cthulhu Saves the World” and “Breath of Death VII: The Beginning,” to resuscitate the franchise.  Players will step onto an all new Precipice in the third installment, one which delivers old school aesthetics with updated battles and a signature, bizarre tone.  The collaboration is absolute, and the result is absolutely unique.

“We chose the right partner,” said Holkins, when asked if Zeboyd was a good partner or not.  “I would choose them again.  And I did, because we still have another one of these to do.”

“On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3” is priced at $4.99 (400 Microsoft Points, or “magicoins,” for the Xbox Live Indie Games version).  All who purchase the PC version at Steam during the first week of availability will get a free bonus game with their order: the almost equally unnerving and skewed “Cthulhu Saves the World”.

  • June 25 for PC and XBIG release—plus new screenshots!

    June 13th, 2012

    Excerpt from Tycho post:

“On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness: Episode 3 was well received at E3, which is nice, because we tried desperately to bring about that very result.  We’re committed to releasing it “When It’s Done” as they say, and it is done, so waiting until July seems dumb.  How does the 25th sound, for Steam and XBLIG?  Zeboyd is throwing in Cthulhu Saves The World for Steam purchases in the first week, which I thought was sweet of them.  The ports are…  porting, EVEN NOW, and the PC version will have SteamPlay when Mac goes live.  The trailer goes up Monday; I am trying not to be excited, to temper my expectations, but I am not doing a very good job.”

The screenshots gallery has also been updated with new images!
