In taking the reins on Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, Zeboyd has created not only a game that will sate fans eager to see the story continue, but a game that stands up firmly on its own. At five bucks, it’s an easy recommendation for anyone even remotely interested in role-playing games.

Brilliant writing. 16-bit aesthetic looks great, and complements the gameplay.

Episode 3 had me laughing out loud on more occasions than the first two games put together.

The writing is still incredibly clever, and the combat a ton of fun. As a bonus, those who haven’t played the first two shouldn’t have much trouble jumping in here. There are allusions to events that transpired in the first two games, but it takes very little time to pick up on the basic premise. As someone who loved the first two titles, and was saddened by the cancellation of the third, this game is everything I could have hoped for

Fans of strategic RPG gameplay will definitely find a lot to sink their teeth into here, and it’s hard not to find yourself compelled to keep discovering more about New Arcadia and the heroes and weirdos within it. Delivers a robustly challenging and frequently funny old-school RPG experience that’s heavy on wit, offense, strangeness, and retro style.

The good news is that the series’ signature offbeat humor is as vibrant as ever, and On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 is worth playing for the laughs alone. The better news is that the combat in this loving tribute to the heroic quests of old is smartly designed and stands up today whether you’re a seasoned player of 16-bit RPGs or not.  At the refreshingly modest price of just $4.99, the bounty of laughs and the satisfaction of hard-earned victories aplenty make On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 a journey well worth taking.
